How To Evaluate Quality Carpet

Signs of Quality
Trying to evaluate the huge amount of carpet types on the market can feel overwhelming. It is easy to be misled when comparing woven to tufted and cut-pile to loop. What you need to take into account when buying a quality carpet are the identifiable signs of quality:

While you are looking at the label, also examine the backing of the carpet. Make sure the backing has a tight weave. This ensures quality and wear.

Stain-resistant treatments, like those from  Stainmaster, are often applied to nylon carpets to make them easier to clean. Since wool is naturally soil resistant, it does not require further treatment.

Most carpets are either woven or tufted. Weaving is the superior method as it locks each yarn into the backing, creating a highly durable carpet. Tufted carpets are less expensive because they can be made faster.

Pile Density
Density refers to the amount of pile yarn used in the carpet and the closeness of the weave. In general, the denser the pile, the better the performance. Take the sample and bend the face-pile away from you. Can you see the backing? The denser the pile, the less backing will be visible.
Face Weight
Face weight is the amount of fiber used on the surface of the carpet expressed in ounces per square yard. This should not be confused with total weight, which is the face weight plus the weight of the backing. Do not buy a carpet because it has a high face weight. Other qualities, like density, fiber, and weave are more important. Keep in mind: a lighter weight woven carpet will outperform a higher weight tufted product.

Carpet fibers are twisted together for harder wear and a defined look. The tighter the fiber twist, the longer the carpet will perform.

Testing Carpet Durability

Invista uses the Vettermann drum tumbler to test the durability of STAINMASTER® carpet. It surpasses the industry standard when it comes to durability testing.  This video shows how others “test” their carpet.  Quite an interesting comparison.

Hemphill’s Rugs & Carpets offers Stainmaster branded carpet from Fabrica, Masland, Dixie Home, Moda, Camelot and more.

Stainmaster Vs. Other Carpet Stain Protection Systems

Stainmaster by Invista and 3M’s Scotchguard are two of the most popular types of stain protection applied to carpet today.  While both provide protection from spills and stains, the difference between the two products is significant.  One of the main differences being that some types of Scotchguard must be re-applied to carpet after steam cleaning while Stainmaster will remain for the carpet’s life without further applications.

When color is applied to carpet in the form of color dyes, it is absorbed into the actual carpet fibers through minuscule areas within the fibers called “dye sites.”  These dye sites are essentially microscopic areas containing positive charges which allow negatively charged acid based dyes to “stick” to the carpet fibers.  When the negatively charged dye sticks to a positively charged “dye site” the charge is neutralized which stops the fibers from accepting further dyes.  This is the process through which carpet is given its wide range of colors today.

Unfortunately, even after applying color dyes to carpet there are still “dye sites” within the carpet that have not been neutralized which allows the carpet to accept further staining.  This is how carpet becomes stained from spills.  When you spill something acidic like Gatorade onto a carpet, negatively charged acid from the drink can bond with an “open” dye site leading to a glaring stain on your nice new carpet.

This is where Invista Stainmaster comes into play.  Stainmaster is a clear coating which when applied after color dyeing, neutralizes any remaining “dye sites” within a carpet.  By neutralizing the “dye sites” further color staining is prohibited from taking place.  While not perfect as no carpet is truly stain proof, this coating greatly reduces the chance of permanent stains taking hold.

One significant benefit of having Stainmaster Stainmaster applied to your carpet is that it does not need to be re-applied after steam cleaning.  Scotchguard on the other hand is a surface treatment that does need to be re-applied occasionally after steam cleaning (some forms of Scotchguard will last 10 years before needing to be re-applied).   Scotchguard is more like car wax in that it is not a permanent application.  Like car wax, Scotchguard keeps a substance upon the surface, giving you time to remove it before it sets into a stain.

To summarize, Scotchguard is more of a surface barrier that keeps a stain from entering a carpet’s fibers.  Scotchguard must be re-applied occasionally after a carpet is steam cleaned.  Stainmaster on the other hand is a deep fiber treatment that remains with the carpet for its lifespan.  It affects the carpet at the molecular level in essence “sealing” the carpet from stains.  If you can afford it, we highly recommend that you purchase a carpet with Stainmaster.

Why Wool?

Warren Tyler, a professional speaker and regular contributor to Floor Covering News, recently wrote a column about wool.

The article, entitled “The Lost Carpet Fiber” speaks about wool’s superiority as a carpet fiber. Warren shares how, as a boy, most of his friends’ homes were decorated with wool oriental design rugs. The rose wool rug in his home looked new for years.

What’s different today?

As Warren points out, the demand for carpet has dropped to 40% of the flooring market from 80% just a few years ago. “One major factor that has caused this decline is the introduction of FHA-approved carpet in new homes,” explains Warren. “A 25-ounce plush synthetic can’t look good for more than a year. Don’t believe it? According to statistics, more than 35% of new home buyers change the carpet in less than three years. Why? Synthetics don’t wear out: they ugly out.”

In the U.K. carpet still has 80% share of the flooring market and that is because wool is still the predominant fiber. When retailers sell better quality, consumers are more satisfied and when it is time to replace their flooring..they buy more wool carpet.

Warren points out that in the U.S….consumers are sick and tired of low quality carpet.
