Why is Fabrica Carpet So Expensive?

Fabrica Carpet has a reputation for being the best in the business.  Fabrica is world renowned for its high end, luxury carpet.  If you must have the best, then you’ve really only got one choice in carpet.

But why is Fabrica so  expensive?  Some of their carpet is upwards of $16.00 per square foot!  Not a cheap investment by any means.

Fabrica is expensive because generally their carpet is more time consuming to manufacture.  For instance, they create their wide variety of colors through a process known as Beck Dyeing.  Unlike other carpets that are dyed relatively quickly, color is applied to Fabrica Carpet through hours of deep dye immersion.  This process allows the colors to not only be richer, but more resistant to color fading.  Their patterns are quite impressive as well.  Shown above is their new Art Deco pattern.   Below is a trellis design called Bora Bora.  The tone on tone design is created by using two different types of nylon that absorb the dye differently.

Beck Dyeing also assures that colors between dye lots are consistent.  Other dyeing processes can lead to something called dye lot variation.  A dye lot variation is when the carpet from one batch is off color by a noticeable amount.  Due to Fabrica’s intensive color dyeing process you don’t have to worry about this being an issue.  Fabrica is world famous for its extensive color palette and also offers custom colors.

Overall Fabrica’s manufacturing process is above the industry standard in virtually every way.  In addition to using premium fibers, the twist of their carpet is tighter, it is denser than normal carpet, and it includes a high quality synthetic, latex backing which resists stretching and wrinkling.  Properly installed Fabrica Carpet will not only last a long time but retain its vibrant colors much longer than normal run of the mill carpet will.

Fabrica’s formal plushes are in my opinion where the company really shines.  If you compare one of Fabrica’s plushes to a competitors product, the difference is immediately apparent.  Their plushes are very finely twisted and have a magnificently soft and smooth finish.  The finish on their carpet is so fine due to the multiple times the carpet is sheared.  This gives the carpet an elegant, smooth finish that in our opinion many other carpet manufacturer’s plushes just can’t compete with.

Being an exclusive product, you can’t find Fabrica Carpet everywhere.  Fabrica isn’t something you’ll find on sale at a cheap outlet somewhere.  Our showroom offers the entire collection of Fabrica styles as well as an experienced staff and installers.  It’s important that the carpet installers you choose are Fabrica certified as they will have been trained how to best lay seams and whatnot.

Buying Fabrica Carpet is like purchasing a luxury car.  Is it absolutely necessary?  No, but owning Fabrica will add depth and a certain special something to your house that’s almost priceless.  Not to mention the bragging rights you’ll gain when neighbors come to visit.  It’s nice to be able to say that you own carpet that is in the White House.

Extreme Makeover Without Going to Extremes

Instantly transform a room from the ground up. Shown here, Nourison’s Nourmak area rug creates a traditional feel and the same room with a more contemporary rug from the company’s Elements collection.

Think an “extreme makeover” project has to include a sledgehammer and general contractor? Well, interior design does not always have to include knocking down walls or expensive construction.

One of the easiest ways to change an interior is to start with new area rugs, which go far beyond merely providing covering for a floor. They can serve as the impetus for a new color palette and decorating scheme, changing the entire look and feel of a room without breaking the bank. From traditional Persians to transitional styles, to contemporary works of art, there are more styles to choose from at every price point than ever before.

“Today’s designs have a level of sophistication that just wasn’t available in the past,” says Joyce Lowe, a veteran industry design expert, and VP Area Rug Sales for Nourison, the world’s largest manufacturer of handmade area rugs. “Just about any design type is now available in nearly every construction, with textures, carvings, and fiber mixtures that create striking highlights and pattern details.”

Are you a traditionalist? Choose an heirloom quality hand-made rug from the Nourmak collection, hand made of rich New Zealand wool, or Nourison 2000, highlighted with pure silk-accented designs. Want a living room that’s sleek and modern? A designer rug from Calvin Klein home, rich in texture, color and style, can provide the starting point.

Color is of course, a huge component of a room’s décor and should be chosen with care. “A basic rule of thumb in interior design is to select one neutral tone and two brighter accent colors that combine in a pleasing way,” adds Lowe. Transitional and contemporary rugs from Nourison make choosing accent colors easy because world-class design teams have already selected colors that work well together. Simply pull and match colors from the field of design details.

“Your choice of accessories should complement the décor,” says Lowe. Wall colors, window treatments and accessories are important to a good redesign, none of which need be expensive to change. Toss out old curtains, candles and other accessories from your old room and bring in high fashion pillows, and other accents in complementary colors and styles. You’ll be surprised at how dramatic the change will be.

Wool Carpet Fibers Assist With BP Gulf Oil Spill

The Gulf oil spill, which was triggered by the explosion of the Deepwater oilrig on April 20, has become the biggest environmental disaster ever experienced in the U.S. The devastation has impacted lives, jobs, marine life, wildlife, tourism and the health, financial and emotional wellbeing of many. At this point, the reach of the catastrophe is uncertain, but some leading scientists believe the damaging effects will be felt all the way to Europe and the Arctic. Those of us living outside of the Gulf keep reading the headlines and listening to the news with a feeling of helplessness. Although no news about the oil spill is good, the wool industry is finding ways to lend a hand and help in the clean efforts.

You may have heard that many salons are donating cut hair to help fill booms. Well…another sought after filler for booms is wool. Wool, which has been shown to soak up 40 times its weight in oil, traps the contaminant instead of absorbing it. This means the oil can be removed from the wool and recycled and the wool can be reused several times before its efficiency decreases.
To aid in the oil-spill cleanup, volunteers throughout the Gulf have been making miles and miles of booms. These booms are typically filled with polypropylene, which doesn’t work near as well as hair and wool. To help provide better filler, Wools of New Zealand contacted its U.S. manufacturer partners who answered the call to donate wool waste for use in the clean-up efforts. The wool waste material is shipped to Matter of Trust, an organization that warehouses the fiber and makes it into booms. The wool is joined by thousands of pounds of hair, fleece and feathers that will be turned into booms and used for shoreline protection and oil spill clean up.

Wool has been called on before for this same purpose. As reported by BBC News, New Zealand sent wool booms to the Persian Gulf during the first Iraq war in 1991. The wool booms successfully helped clean up the million tons of oil released by retreating Iraqi soldiers.

It’s not surprising that wool can be of benefit. It is natural, biodegradable, hydrophobic, buoyant and has large retaining capacity. Wool truly is an incredible fiber. Even though it has been around for thousands of years, it continues to surprise us with its ability to make the world around us a better place.

Hemphill’s Rugs & Carpets is proud to be associated with the Wools of New Zealand as a Premier Partner. Many of our wool carpet vendors have partnered with our showroom and the Wools of New Zealand in an effort to make the world a “greener” place. Some of our key wool carpet manufactures include Karastan, Fabrica, Masland, Nourison, Stanton, J. Mish, Robertex, Hagaman, Couristan, Bellbridge, Concepts International, Prestige Mills, Carousel, Woolshire, Unique Carpets and more.

As you can see from the impressive list above, Hemphill’s Rugs & Carpets offers a huge selection of natural fiber products including wool, sisal, abaca, seagrass, mountain grass and jute.

Wool For A Better World

It only takes one trip to Hemphill’s Rugs & Carpets to notice the vast range of colors, patterns and textures available in carpets. But the choices don’t end there; fiber is another important consideration. Carpets can be made from a number of different fibers, including nylon, acrylic, and polypropylene or a blend of two or more fibers. However, it is wool that sets the standard. Why? Because wool looks beautiful, feels incredible and ages gracefully while boasting superior performance and easy care properties.

Wool has been a part of human life for more than 12,000 years. Originally used to protect the body from heat and freezing temperatures, wool has played an important role in man’s battle against the elements. Its overall superiority stems from the complexity of its fiber, developed by evolution to protect sheep in all types of climatic conditions.

The same properties that make wool uniquely superior in clothing and blankets also make it the ultimate carpet fiber. Wool’s natural crimp gives carpets built-in resilience to crushing so they look good longer, while wool’s natural resistance to dirt and soiling makes for exceptionally easy maintenance. Wool is also naturally flame retardant and has excellent sound and heat insulating properties. As such, you will find wool carpets hard at work in residential as well as demanding commercial environments, such as hotels, restaurants, and transit systems where the volume of pedestrian traffic is punishing.

Aside from its many performance benefits, wool has incredible aesthetic appeal.

Wool manufacturers are some of the world’s most creative artisans, weaving and tufting the fiber into a wide array of captivating textures and patterns, including velvety cut-piles, friezes, boucles, shags, textured loops and Wiltons. Strikingly rich, saturated colors are another hallmark of wool. Its affinity for color makes it possible to create carpets and rugs in every shade imaginable.

Many people choose a neutral shade of carpet because it allows for greater flexibility, and also lends itself to layering by adding an accent or contrasting rug. However, saturated shades provide tremendous creative freedom. Dynamic colors create stunning effects and help to define areas of the home with exhilarating style. Wool carpets in exotic colors, like those featured above from Unique Carpets’ Couture Collection, can inspire one’s total interior design concept.

Hemphill’s Rugs & Carpets offers wool from a variety of special manufacturers including: Nourison, Stanton, Masland, Fabrica, Unique Carpets, Bellbridge, Prestige Mills, Concepts International, Karastan, Couristan, Carousel, Robertex, Radici, Woolshire, Godfrey Hirst, Design Materials, J.
