All Karastan Wool Products Clean Air Certified

Karastan said it has become the first company to carry the Wool: Clean Air Certified label on all of its wool carpets and rugs, a program managed by Wools of New Zealand.

Products approved to carry the Wool: Clean Air Certified label are tested by a certified independent laboratory and must pass VOC emission testing for 13 contaminants.

In addition, the products are required to meet scientifically established testing standards that verify reductions of VOCs, including formaldehyde, sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide, in the indoor environment.

“Wool has incredible attributes that deserve to be recognized,” says Connie Berry, director of marketing for Karastan.

“As the largest manufacturer of wool carpets and rugs in America, we applaud Wools of New Zealand for giving wool a greater voice. Solid scientific backing and high testing standards give the Wool: Clean Air Certified label impressive credibility that we are proud to carry on our products.”

In addition to meeting the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED point requirements, the certification also meets the standards for California Section 01350 and Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS).

Carpets and rugs containing a minimum of 50 percent wool are eligible for the certification.

A History of Karastan Rugs

The first Karastan Axminster rug came off an Eden loom at 2:02 p.m. on April 8, 1928. When we visited on Oct. 20, 2010, Karastan Original Collection rugs were still being made on the company’s Axminster looms.

Karastan 717 Multi Colored Panel Kirman

Karastan’s 50-color 717 Multi-Color Panel Kirman design in the Karastan Original collection was introduced in 1937 and is still the company’s all-time best seller.

Over the years, Karastan has modernized the Eden facility to include Karaloc woven and Van de Wiele wilton looms. (Machine-tufted Karastan broadloom is produced in other facilities). Both spool and gripper Axminster constructions were developed from the original jacquard loom technology invented in Axminster, England during the Industrial Revolution of the early 19th century.

Halcyon Skinner, an American who was employed by Alexander Smith, is credited with inventing the spool Axminster in 1878.

Today, Karastan is the only U.S. maker of spool Axminster rugs.

Modern electronic gripper Axminster carpeting is made all over the world and most often found in contract installations, particularly in the hospitality field.

When Karastan developed advanced Axminster technology in 1928, the new manufacturing process was considered so revolutionary that the trade press reportedly referred to the first Karastan rugs as “Mystery Rugs.” Axminster rugs can contain up to 50 colors, which has been a major selling point since the looms were invented. The depth and detail of a traditional hand-knotted rug can be reproduced using this manufacturing technique.

The fact that Axminster rugs are also virtually indestructible is another major selling point. Karastan invited visitors to walk on the rugs at both the 1933-34 World’s Fair in Chicago and the 1939-40 World’s Fair in New York. Nearly 5 million people walked on a Karastan rug in Chicago and 9 million people walked on another Karastan rug in New York. After both Fairs, the rugs were cleaned and restored to their original condition.

Extreme Makeover Without Going to Extremes

Instantly transform a room from the ground up. Shown here, Nourison’s Nourmak area rug creates a traditional feel and the same room with a more contemporary rug from the company’s Elements collection.

Think an “extreme makeover” project has to include a sledgehammer and general contractor? Well, interior design does not always have to include knocking down walls or expensive construction.

One of the easiest ways to change an interior is to start with new area rugs, which go far beyond merely providing covering for a floor. They can serve as the impetus for a new color palette and decorating scheme, changing the entire look and feel of a room without breaking the bank. From traditional Persians to transitional styles, to contemporary works of art, there are more styles to choose from at every price point than ever before.

“Today’s designs have a level of sophistication that just wasn’t available in the past,” says Joyce Lowe, a veteran industry design expert, and VP Area Rug Sales for Nourison, the world’s largest manufacturer of handmade area rugs. “Just about any design type is now available in nearly every construction, with textures, carvings, and fiber mixtures that create striking highlights and pattern details.”

Are you a traditionalist? Choose an heirloom quality hand-made rug from the Nourmak collection, hand made of rich New Zealand wool, or Nourison 2000, highlighted with pure silk-accented designs. Want a living room that’s sleek and modern? A designer rug from Calvin Klein home, rich in texture, color and style, can provide the starting point.

Color is of course, a huge component of a room’s décor and should be chosen with care. “A basic rule of thumb in interior design is to select one neutral tone and two brighter accent colors that combine in a pleasing way,” adds Lowe. Transitional and contemporary rugs from Nourison make choosing accent colors easy because world-class design teams have already selected colors that work well together. Simply pull and match colors from the field of design details.

“Your choice of accessories should complement the décor,” says Lowe. Wall colors, window treatments and accessories are important to a good redesign, none of which need be expensive to change. Toss out old curtains, candles and other accessories from your old room and bring in high fashion pillows, and other accents in complementary colors and styles. You’ll be surprised at how dramatic the change will be.
